THE BARI GUIDE

Updated: Apr 20, 2020

A MAP YOU CAN RELY ON TO HIGHLIGHT YEREVAN'S ABSOLUTE BEST

Yerevan is constantly evolving. It's become a thriving breeding ground and melting pot for new ideas as East clashes with West, marking a new era in Armenian history. It began with the 2018 Velvet Revolution, which challenged a gluttonous government that once crippled the very spirit and hopes of its people. Today, the story is much different. The revolution sent shockwaves through Armenian society to bring about change not only in politics, but in business, culture, trends, music, fashion, and daily life overall.

And with that change, Yerevan is truly starting to express itself. The city's excitement is contagious, and the vibe is just 'cool.' Speakeasies, barber shops, tech hubs, retro cafes, wine bars, craft beer, hip hop, and EDM have breathed new life into Yerevan's old, charming streets. At the same time, what's new today may be old news tomorrow, so keeping up with the city's fast pace can be quite a challenge. Don't be fooled by its small size either; finding the good spots takes some effort, which is why I'm excited to introduce the Bari Guide, the first of many endeavors I'll be pursuing through this blog.

THE BARI GUIDE

The Bari Guide is a custom map I've built in Google Maps to help navigate you through Yerevan's buzz. In it, you'll find my top picks by category, including Points of Interest, Cafes, Lunch, Restaurants, Bars/Pubs, Clubs, Live Music, and Supermarkets/Currency Exchanges. Let's see how it works.

DESKTOP

1) Head to barigalust.com/thebariguide, or click on THE BARI GUIDE tab at the very top of this page.

2) An interactive, embedded Google Map will appear on the page that follows with a legend below it. Use that legend to navigate through the Bari Guide's color-coded pins.

3) Click on any pin to reveal the name, description, and details of a particular location.

4) To view a list of clickable pins by category, toggle the Bari Guide's menu panel by clicking the icon at the top left of the map.

5) To view the Bari Guide in full screen (as seen above), open it in Google Maps by clicking the icon at the top right of the map.

MOBILE

1) Head to barigalust.com/bariguidemobile, or tap on THE BARI GUIDE tab by toggling the menu at the top right of your screen.

2) Press and hold The Bari Guide button on the page that follows.

3) Select 'Open in New Tab.'

"Why can't I just tap on The Bari Guide button and open it in my Google Maps app?"

You can, but the general interface for viewing any custom map in the Google Maps app on mobile devices is not very user-friendly. It also severely limits the Bari Guide's functionality, which is why I highly advise you to open the map in a mobile browser like Safari, Chrome, or Firefox instead.

4) With the new tab open, refresh the link.

5) Blame Google for having to go through steps 2, 3, and 4.

6) You'll know the map has loaded successfully when 'The Bari Guide' title appears at the bottom left of your screen, as displayed.

7) Tap on any pin to reveal the name of a particular location. It'll replace 'The Bari Guide' title.

8) Tap on the name of the location selected to reveal its description and details. To get back to the map, tap on the back arrow to the left of the location's name.

10) To view a list of clickable pins by category, toggle the Bari Guide's menu panel by tapping on 'The Bari Guide' title, as displayed. If you see the name of a particular location in its place, tap on any empty space in the map to unselect that pin so that 'The Bari Guide' reappears.

If there was any way to make the Bari Guide more mobile-friendly, I would. But once you pass its learning curve, this guide will become your best friend. The descriptions of each pin are written by me. And as this blog continues to develop, I'll be filling them in with helpful tips and blurbs about why I like each place.

I'll keep the Bari Guide updated and relevant with Yerevan't hottest, so be sure to check it out before you hit the town!
